Where the text comes from
Despite looking like gibberish, Lorem Ipsum has real classical roots. It is a scrambled, deliberately mangled passage from "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a treatise on ethics written by the Roman statesman Cicero in 45 BC. The recognizable fragment "dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet" comes from a section discussing pain and pleasure, which is where the words lorem, ipsum, dolor, and amet originate.
The text was scrambled on purpose. Letters were dropped, words were chopped, and Latin grammar was abandoned, all so that no reader would mistake the placeholder for a finished message or get drawn into reading it. Alternatives to classic Lorem Ipsum
Lorem Ipsum is the default, but it is not the only option. Some teams prefer real sentences in their own language so the placeholder reads naturally and reveals problems that Latin can hide, such as how genuine word lengths wrap and break; a random sentence generator is well suited to this. Others use themed dummy-text variants for novelty, and still others fill mockups with the actual draft copy as soon as it exists.
